Porting is moving a fax number from one carrier or service to another so that clients who have it on file keep reaching you. Porting a fax number in five steps
- Do not cancel the old line. A port moves an active number. Cancelling the old service first releases the number to the carrier's pool, and once released it may be gone. Keep the old account open until the new provider confirms the port has completed.
- Gather the losing carrier's account details. The port request needs the account number, the billing name and address exactly as the old carrier holds them, and often a recent bill. A mismatch is the usual reason a port is rejected, and each rejection restarts the clock.
- Sign up with the new provider and file the port. Choose the plan on the table's allowance and overage, then submit the port form. WestFax prints the fee: $20 one time per number to provision or port, on every plan. Other providers state porting on their support pages, and some include it; ask before you sign up if the fee decides the choice.
- Wait for the port date. Ports in the United States commonly complete within a couple of weeks; the new provider tells you the scheduled date. Faxes to the number keep arriving at the old service until then, which is another reason to leave it running.
- Send a test fax to the ported number. Once the provider confirms, send a fax to yourself from another service or ask a client to. The PDF arriving in the new inbox is the proof the port worked; then cancel the old account.
What porting costs

When a new number is better than a port

If that number is tied to a phone line you are also dropping, port the fax number to the online service and let the voice line go separately; the two can be split at the carrier.
