What decides how long a fax takes

1. Page count and density. Each page is transmitted as an image, so a page of small print or a scanned form with shading carries more data than a page of large text, and takes longer. Sending at standard rather than fine resolution roughly halves the time per page where the provider offers the choice.
2. The receiving line. A busy line, an old machine or a poor connection slows the handshake and forces retries. Online providers retry automatically; a fax that fails after retries is reported as failed rather than left hanging, and the report says which number and when.
